Our Core Research Team

We are twelve independent laboratories working together to find new ways to prevent cancers, better treat cancers and understand how they arise.

Dr. Darren Brenner

Dr. Darren Brenner

Molecular biomarkers for cancer risk prediction

Short Bio Summary

Dr. Brenner is a genetic and molecular epidemiologist interested in how lifestyle and environment impact the genome and epigenome to impact cancer risk. Originally from Ontario (PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto) Canada, Darren is thankful to now call the beautiful province of Alberta home, leading a small research group of dedicated and energetic individuals with a shared goal of reducing the burden of cancer in Canada.

Research Interests

Dr. Brenner is a molecular cancer epidemiologist in the Departments of Oncology and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. His research is focused on the intersection of lifestyle, genetics and molecular pathways in the development of several cancers. Dr. Brenner is currently leading studies to examine the utility of biomarkers in the prediction of cancer risk. He is also examining the impact of lifestyle (obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, poor nutrition) and environmental factors on relevant genetic and molecular pathways in colorectal, breast and lung cancer risk. Dr. Brenner is also a key member of the Evict Radon confederation of scholars, working towards understanding and preventing radon-induced cancers in Canada.
